The Little Hours (2017) How this movie grabs you depends completely on how sustainable you consider its primary gimmick.......
A half-assed blend of equal parts Monty Python and Saturday Night Live, the movie plunders a horny-nun tale ripped out of Boccaccio's 'The Decameron'......... and presents it performed in the most up-to-date 21st century sarcastic language by a host of worthy comic actors.
In other words, a medieval-set SNL skit stretched out to 90 long, long minutes.
So you see what we mean here........you might start laughing during the first few scenes, when nun Aubrey Plaza suddenly erupts at a kindly peasant...."what the fuck are you looking at?!"
90 minutes of it? Personally, we grew weary after about a half hour.......
Some jokes land, some don't. And sometimes it's just desperate vamping from the actors. The overall effect is like watching a moderately funny Improvisational troupe struggling and sweating during the 'audience suggestion' segment......when somebody in the crowd yelled out, "Medieval Italian Nunnery!"
We can't fault them for trying........the whole notion of repressed, virginal nuns giving in to their every forbidden desire has worked both as comedy and horror in countless movies. ....(a nun ripping her habit off in a sexual frenzy is as much a cinematic trope as a custard pie in the face.....)
And we did feverishly love the pairing-up of those two off-the-rails saucer-eyed beauties, Aubrey Plaza and Kate Micucci, a comedy team to die for. (and we'd line up to see them teamed up in more films....) They're Laurel and Hardy for the New Age......with Plaza the raging Id and Micucci the deceptively sweet, put-upon little mouse who conceals a mania more than equal to Plaza's.
For those two and the rest of the cast, who manage to wring a fair amount of sly laughs out of a one-joke gimmick, we'll bless them all with 2 & 1/2 stars. (** 1/2) (But once it stops being funny for you, we'd recommend hitting the Stop button.......)
