In Pieces by Sally Field (2018) To be perfectly honest here......there was no way we weren't going to devour and love this book........having had a mad crush on Sally Field since her days as "Gidget" and "The Flying Nun"......and been a devoted fan through her amazing evolution into a celebrated, award-winning actress and beloved cultural icon......
We would have embraced the book even if it turned out as a clumsily ghost-written, gossip laden, "....and then I did this movie, and then I did that movie"kind of lazy exercise........
It's anything but.
We should have realized Sally Field's ability to stun the world with previously unknown talents. Our reaction to "In Pieces" was almost the same as when Field took every one's breath away in 1976 with her bravura, spectacular, multiple personality performance in "Sybil".......
Who knew she could write with such skill, humor and brutal honesty?
This is as far from a typical throwaway, self-serving showbiz autobiography as you could get........Field doesn't shy away from detailing an imperfect life.....the life all of us live, filled with mistakes, roads not taken, loves won and lost, moments of laughter, tragedy, adversity.......all the highs and lows, some of them brought about by ourselves, some by others, some by random fate.....
The revelation here - Field's prose......never less than brutally incisive and honest in dealing with her own foibles as well as those in her lifelong orbit and at times filled with laugh out loud wit and humor.
We'll not spend any time describing or detailing any of the eye-popping surprises that Field reveals here........you should dive in and discover them yourself. Our only criticism......we wish the book had been twice and long.
For the first time since we don't know when.......a full fledged 5 star (*****) FIND OF FINDS.........a must read.
