'COMPANION'........SOULMATES GONE AWRY IN THE NOT-TOO-DISTANT A.I. FUTURE......

 Companion (2025)

We found ourselves a bit stumped as to how to go about discussing this film without spoiling all its twists and turns.......

We'll trust that our beloved BQ visitors are all smart enough to guess what it's about from its arresting poster image.

Yes, you figured it out. Brilliant young actress Sophie Thatcher (our nominee for Breakout Star of The Year) plays Iris, a cute-as-a-bunny A.I. robot.   And she's currently on lease to sweet guy Josh (Jack Quaid), functioning as his gal pal, GF, sex buddy, soulmate (feel free to add your own definitions.....)

Iris cannot lie, can be switched on or off at command and is programmed to adore Josh. But before all you guys in the BQ universe start salivating and adjusting your underwear.......

Jack and Iris arrive at a weekend getaway at the vast sprawling estate of expatriate Russian oligarch Sergey (Rupert Friend).  Also on the guest list - Jack's roly-poly bud Eli (Harvey Guillen), Eli's blonde Adonis boyfriend Patrick (Lukas Gage) and Sergey's acerbic arm candy Kat (Megan Suri).

What could possibly go wrong here......(heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh.......

Multiple deaths? Check. Blood splatter? Double check. Twists you didn't see coming? Triple check. A finale fairly dripping with ominous irony?  Oh you betcha.

But we're done talking about the plot in any detail at this point.

Here's what we do want you to know........

'Companion' cleverly blends its usual horror movie tropes into a blood soaked collision of sex and technology, a satiric metaphor for the state of the Battle of the Sexes in the 21st century. And in the escalating battle for relationship control, it's anyone's guess who comes out alive......

Let us once again heap some more praise on Ms.Thatcher, who embodies an incredible array of moods, emotions, dialogue delivery and endures more wear and tear than a toddler's Transformer action figure......enough to make us race to be first in line to see whatever project she lands in next.

A nasty good time for horror fans seeking a little something extra in their cup 'o blood. This one's got it, take BQ's word.

           4 & 1/2 stars (****1/2)
