It (2017) Yeah, yeah....it's scary good fun for the horror movie faithful fans......make ya jump every two minutes, yada, yada.......(you should know us by now....we don't want to cover the same ground that no doubt 8 million other reviewers and bloggers have posted on this already....)
After finally catching up with "It"......here's the thing......
Derry, the Douchebag Capitol.....is it just us noticing this......that every adult in this movie is a raging asshole. We suppose that's a super way to further isolate our vulnerable bunch of pre-teen heroes....have them simultaneously bedeviled by their repulsive parents and the demonic Clown Monster........like bouncing back and forth between Pence and Trump.
We're guessing Pennywise rises up in this town every 27 years for no other reason than to thin out its ever-burgeoning population of creeps, pederasts, bullies and generally unpleasant people......presumably, he snacks on the kids for dessert.....
King-Bullies! Let's hand it to Stephen King right here......nobody, but nobody creates more vicious, hateful school-age bullies than the King-inator. And the filmmakers certainly understood that King's bullies are every bit as psychopathic, relentless and monstrous as whatever supernatural creature is laying waste to the sweet, gentle characters we come to love.
We hope that one day, some studio will create an "Avengers/Justice League" assemblage of Stephen King bullies and pit them against Josh Brolin so most of them can be reduced to dust........(we can dream, can't we?)
Rudy Giuliani & Pennywise: A Super-Villain & his Alter-Ego? What a perfect time to view this movie......at the end of a mad, mad,, mad, mad weekend of Rudy-Mania. Couldn't help noticing all the similarities........Rudy and Pennywise are both world-class liars, whose eyes periodically pop out of their heads as they bare their teeth and spin their fantasies........both untrustworthy clowns who make no sense at all.......the only difference between them.......Pennywise is an actual monster, while Rudy merely sold his soul to one.....
For "It" and Pennywise, we'll blow up 3 red balloons (***).......for Rudy Giuliani in his new role as Mob Boss shyster.......we proudly declare him the 2nd recipient of the BQ's most sacred honorary award.......yes, Rudy, you get the BQ's one and only AFH.... ABOMINATION FROM HELL.......the only award that comes with a book of Taco Bell coupons and a window seat on any Southwest Airlines flight of your choice. Enjoy!

'MY NAME IS VENUS BLACK'.........PLEASE ENTER YOUR REDEMPTION CODE.....
My Name Is Venus Black by Heather Lloyd (2018) For weeks and weeks, saw this one sitting on our library's new release shelf........apparently unloved, un-noticed and never checked out by anyone.......
Aaahh, we realized the answer. It didn't have the breathless burbs of "Here's your next 'Gone Girl' written all over it......
It had its share of glowing recommendations from authors, but they described it as a heartfelt drama........so, no unreliable narrator........and only one dead body.
The book promised a story of redemption........and full disclosure here, the BQ is a shameless sucker for such tales......
So we plucked it off the shelves, becoming our library's first patron to give it a spin....
Didn't take us long to realize that we didn't belong in this book's demographic.......it fell somewhere in a gray area between angst-ridden Young Adult and Chick-Lit Serious Fiction.......
But we stuck with it for a number of reasons......first, we liked that the prose remained simple, functional and unadorned with any discernible stylings. In other words, a merciful lack of Creative Writing Graduate Student showing off.........
And author Lloyd took to heart that basic lesson pounded into the heads of all fledgling fiction writers......"chase your characters up a tree.....shake a stick at them.....then find a way to get them back down again...."
For Redemption Suckers like us.....how could we resist? The book follows not one, but two parallel gut-punch storylines.......a 19 year old woman piecing together a semblance of an adult life after spending five years in a Juvenile Lockup for the murder of her stepfather.......and the heartbreaking tribulations of her autistic younger brother, kidnapped by his own uncle then abandoned and left with yet another family, a tattoo artist and his young daughter.
That sounds like enough misery to keep "Days Of Our Lives" going for another two years....but to her great credit, Heather Lloyd plows straight ahead with her characters' many troubles and never stops to beg for tears........or waste time with any elaborate metaphors or overheated contemplation.
We didn't even mind that the book neatly wrapped up all these impossibly grim plot threads in a feel-good finale that reads as if ready made for a comforting, soothing film adaptation. (If Garry Marshall were still with us, this might have served as a perfect project for him....)
After returning it, we once again noticed the book back to its lonely vigil on our library's shelf......still searching for readers.....
If you catch sight of it on your library's shelves, sitting there all by its lonesome little self.....we recommend an adoption......if you fall hard for stories like this one, give it a shot......and give the 'Gone Girl' wanna-be's a rest for a while. 3 stars (***)

'YOR, THE HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE'.............YOR STILL THE ONE, BUDDY..........
Yor, The Hunter From The Future (1983) In the midst of the horrors of current events, what a great way to cheer ourselves up........
Cheesy madness doesn't get any better (or joyously weirder) than this........
Multiple, multiple awards to bestow........oh,, where to begin....
Best Director For A Movie That Starts Out Prehistoric And Turns Into Sci-Fi Complete With Frickin' Laser Beams......Anthony M. Dawson, a.k.a. Antonio Margheriti.......forget Sylvester Stallone......Dawson's the real Italian Stallion of Cinema, pumping out close to 60 movies of every genre imaginable.......it's a bird.....it's a plane......it's Euro-Corman!
Best Hunka-Hunka Burnin' Pecs.....Reb Brown, the very first guy to play Captain America.....(in movies that cost less than catering budget of any Marvel film)......Reb arrives in this movie already looking like an action figure who broke out of his plastic toy store box.....complete with sculpted bod and a wig sheared off from a half off a llama.
Best Full-Sized Dinosaur Discarded From "The Muppet Show" It does get to move its head from side to side before Reb massages it with his trusty club........(causing Reb to scream out to the world as if he's either enjoying a triumphant moment or getting a colonoscopy without sedatives....)
Best Smokin' Hot Cave-Girl Corinne Clery, outfitted in standard designer fur-lined, Jurassic bikini.......more than equal to Raquel Welch in "One Million Years B.C."
Best Insanely Idiotic Music At The Most Inappropriate Moments.....To John Scott, for throwing in a screaming chorus every time our boy Reb does a crazy stunt.....woo-hoooo!
Best Movie That Suddenly Lurches From Cavemen 'N Clubs to Sci-Fi Villians Named 'Overlords' Armed With Frickin' Laser Beams......No more explanation required.......
Best Movie That Could Only Exist In The 1980's.....When People Would Throw Anything Into Their VHS Machines If All The Good Stuff Was Rented Out......and that's why we revel in the cockeyed glory of "Yor"........a movie that's downright sweetly innocent in its complete and total dementia.......3 stars (***) "Yor" remains ours forever......

MEMO TO TRUMP MINIONS...........REMEMBER MOLA RAM AND ERNST STAVRO BLOFELD......
Memo From : The Beached Quill
To: All Baby Orange Minions, Lawyers, Surrogates, Hangers-On, Apologizers, Spin-Doctors and Assorted Ass-Kissers
Subject: Danger Warning - History is coming........
We know you've all chosen to 'live in the moment', as they say.........but you might want to stop and think ahead to more than 8 hours at a time........
You do know that eventually, your Dear Leader will be driven from office, either by the voters or more likely.....impeachment. ....
And all the ways in which you debased, diminished and humiliated yourselves will be held up to the glaring searchlights of history......
Like cockroaches caught in the middle of the kitchen floor after the lights get switched on, you'll scurry to hide under the floorboards, but the bug spray of reality will hit you hard....and lay you low.
And some of you won't even make it that far.......you'll have already been hurled into the abyss (or thrown under the bus....or whatever metaphor works for you best)......
Like so many poor souls before you, it'll dawn on you too late that you've been sacrificed as disposable waste by a soulless psychopath who thinks only of his own self-preservation......
We strongly suggest you re-watch "Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom".......notice that poor wailing sucker who has his beating heart pulled out of his chest by the madman Mola Ram? Just before ole Mola drops him into a pit of boiling lava?
That's you.
Remember Mola Ram desperately scrambling up the remnants of the collapsed bridge? Remember how he throws a few of his own terrified swordsmen off the ladder, hurling the hapless screaming minions into the jaws of the crocodiles below?
They're you.
Or, if you prefer a more modern analogy.......you can think of yourselves as SPECTRE employees serving Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the Bond movies......
Remember the little chess-master ferret in "From Russia With Love"? Who thought he was enormously clever in the service of his master......until he caught a poisoned knife blade jammed into his ankle........
That's you.
There's countless other examples in these movies......or devoted shlubs who end up shot, blown up and have their eyes gouged out for not adequately serving the Boss.
You get the idea.
So we ask you to think this over..........you've already destroyed your professional reputations and you're facing a long road back to humanity, civility and common decency........some of you won't even enjoy the option of rehabilitating yourselves..... as you're led away in handcuffs.....
We highly recommend you think a little past tomorrow.........remember what John Travolta's paint store boss warned him at the beginning of "Saturday Night Fever".....(right after we hear Travolta dismissively toss off, "....fuck the future!"
"You don't fuck the future, Tony. The future fucks YOU...."
You folks are facing the future. Sooner than later.
Sincerely,
The BQ

'SORCERER'..........BYE, BYE, 70'S CINEMA.........
Sorcerer (1977) Two big movies went into the marketplace in the summer of 1977........
George Lucas's swashbuckling, crowd-rousing sci-fi fantasy "Star Wars"......and William Friedkin's grim, gritty "Sorcerer", an ambitious remake of the French classic "The Wages Of Fear", concerning lost souls who end up driving trucks loaded with unstable dynamite.....
Guess which one of them audiences stayed away from in vast numbers......
You couldn't ask for a more telling metaphor of one era of cinema heading for the exits, while another one, the era of the feel-good blockbuster, trumpeting its grand arrival.......
Friedkin's film, a grueling, heart-of-darkness marathon similar in many ways to Coppola's "Apocalypse Now", was an uncompromising director-driven trip into nihilistic hell that had no interest in generating claps and cheers from an audience.
Moviegoers, floating on galactic helium from repeat viewings of "Star Wars", wanted nothing more to do with any further iconoclastic, downbeat visions from 70's auteurs......
And "Sorcerer" was the honest-to-God, real down 'n dirty deal......with a quartet of unsavory, unsympathetic criminals (Roy Scheider among them) hiding out from their various consequences in an unnamed Latin American hellhole. For cash and passports back to more civilized refuges, they agree to drive two trucks to an oil well fire.........which the company hopes to put out using the trucks' cargo of temperamental TNT that leaks nitro-glycerin.
This mission, as they say......does not bode well for anybody.
For any viewer willing to stick with it.......what a visual feast awaited. Friedkin filled the film with with stunning imagery and bravura moments......including the mind-boggling, "how-the-hell-did-they-do-that?" sequence of the trucks gingerly making their way across a ramshackle, rapidly crumbling and swaying suspension bridge - in the middle of monsoon, no less.
But the l977 summer movie crowd wouldn't go near it........not when they could happily munch popcorn through "Star Wars", "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Smokey and The Bandit."
The bells were tolling for directors of tough, in-your-face cinema like Freidkin.
The rough-edged, deliberately quirky, depressive films of the 70's directors were coming to an end.......(you could point to Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate" as the director-driven epic that really slammed the final nail in the coffin......for both studios and ticket-buyers.
From this point on, fun ruled.........and provocative filmmaking would slowly fall into the hands of independent directors.....(and none of these guys would ever get their hands on the kind of money and studio backing it took to make something like "Sorcerer", or "Apocalypse Now".....or "Heaven's Gate".
It took time, but 41 years later, "Sorcerer" now enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a long lost but newly re-discovered classic.
Couldn't happen to a rougher, tougher, better movie. A 4 star case of dynamite (****) waiting to blow everybody away.......

A GLOWING REPORT FROM THE BQ'S DOCTOR............TO PUT YOUR MINDS AT EASE......
To Whom It May Concern:
This is to state that my patient, BQ (a.k.a. The Beached Quill) has been found to have a heart of pure Titanium.......no....make that Vibranium....or whatever the hell they call that crap they make in that cool African country Waka-Waka-Land......
He's by far the healthiest blogger I've ever attended to........much fitter than the other blogger I treat, the 300 pound guy living in his mother's basement who hacked the U.S. Elections, NATO's nuclear codes, Facebook, and your mother's last 2 e-mails........
In fact, BQ's so healthy, he'll live long enough to play Gandalf in all the "Lord Of The Rings" remakes........right now, he could scarf down 3 Big Macs plus a bucket of KFC Extra Crispy and still weigh in 175...........
His EKG has the best squiggly lines I've ever seen in a patient.....(although I'm not entirely sure how that works.....I cut that class to go to a Fraternity bash)......come to think of it, there's no squiggles in it at all......it's completely flat. That's a good thing, right?
Overall, the BQ could live another 257 years.......he has the genes of a Galapagos Tortoise.....and moves at about the same speed........this is one guy who'll never have to worry then Medicare gets reduced to 2 band-aids and an Advil for everyone.
Respectfully and truthfully submitted,
Dr. Reince Butcher, M.D.

'THE ADVENTURERS'..........'BANANAS' WITHOUT THE JOKES...........
The Adventurers (1970) We often end up posts on old films, thinking......"you can wait and around and hope, but you'll never see the likes of this again...."
Not this one. No sane human being wants to see another "Adventurers".......
This one belonged to a peculiar, long lost genre.........the Hollywood big budget adaptation of whatever pulpy, trashy, guilty-pleasure novel had crawled up from the depths of hell and perched itself on the best seller lists.
Novelist Harold Robbins was the Supreme Master of such swill, pumping out barely grammatical sex 'n violence carnivals, all of them thinly based on real scandalous characters......
This particular pile of steaming excrement fell into the unlikely hands of of British director Lewis Gilbert, who took it on as a consolation prize after he lost his bid to direct "Oliver!".....
Personally, we would have turned this movie over to the hellishly crazy Sam Peckinpah......half of it takes place in a mythical, revolution-torn banana republic where a never-ending succession of dictators and rebels conduct enthusiastic machine-gun slaughters of each other's forces......heaven made for Sam.
Who knows what Peckinpah would make of the other half of the movie......a depraved soap opera set mostly in Rome, brimming with orgies, sports cars, fashion shows and filthy rich, finely dressed miserable assholes........
We've no idea what a relatively high-toned, tasteful Field Marshall director like Lewis Gilbert was going for here...... possibly, in the back of his mind he thought he could re-shape and rehabilitate Robbins' sludge into a classy David Lean-like epic drama........
Fat chance, Lew.......weighing in at 3 hours, the movie takes on a demented life of its own, a mad, clumsy mixture of 'La Dolce Vita', 'Viva Zapata' and "The Wild Bunch".......
For lovers of cinema trainwrecks, the casting here was a dream come true. The lead role, an exile from the Banana Republic turned playboy-gigalo, fell to a Yugoslav side of beef named Bekim Fehmiu. In addition to possessing no discernible talent, Fehmiu spoke no English, so his tortured attempts at dialogue sounded like he extracted the words out of a pocket dictionary......all his line readings sound like he's asking the hotel desk clerk where the bathroom is.
Also humiliating themselves along side Fehmiu.........Alan Badel, playing a ruthless, murdering dictator as if he's one of the aristocrats in "My Fair Lady", Candice Bergen, at the height of her young, embarrassing non-acting powers, giving herself an instant miscarriage by having Fehmiu push her too high on a swing ( honest).......and Charles Aznavour as a sleazy banker who hangs out in his own private kinky lounge that resembles the "Clockwork Orange" nightspot
Director Gilbert doesn't leave all the awfulness to the actors alone..........he doubles down on the madness, alternating the Rome sex orgies and fashion shows with heaping generous portions of all the atrocities going on in Fehmiu's Banana-Land......non stop rape and Peckinpah-worthy massacres. The movie wallows in its own hyper-ventilating trashiness.
After 177 punishing minutes, "The Adventurers" finally grinds to a halt, still hammering away at what it considers its genius revelation........that Latino revolutionaries invariably transform themselves into the very the fascist strongmen they fought to overthrow.......
About a year later, Woody Allen made the same point in "Bananas"......except it only took him 82 minutes.......and unlike Gilbert's film, all the laughs were intentional......
For movie buffs who treasure and savor disasters......."The Adventurers" is the Holy Grain, the Mother Lode.........but fair warning: sitting through all of it ain't for sissies........we recommend a viewing only for the strongest, iron-willed curators of Trash Cinema.....
Zero stars (0)........if we never see anything like this again......then by all means praise the Deity of your choice......or just wipe your brows and go "whew!"
