Thought we'd have some lightning-round fun to kick off the weekend.....with a bunch of movies that bear absolutely no relations to each other.....
......other than to prove BQ will watch any film, from any era and any genre.......so strap in here we go....
The Tender Trap (1955) Frank Sinatra's a swing-a-ding New York showbiz agent snared by Debbie Reynolds as a single minded ingenue honing in on a husband like a heat-seeking missile. Guess who's she's got in mind. Skinny, scrawny Frank takes his shirt off....not a pretty sight. Thank God, the cute-as-a-button Debbie takes your mind off it. 3 stars (***)
The Admirable Crichton (Paradise Lagoon) (1957 Turn-of-the-Century class warfare as an ever so humble butler (Kenneth More) becomes the sturdy, practical savior of his pampered, wealthy employers when they're all stranded on a tropical island together. Once rescued, the tables turn back. Colorful, witty and ultimately bittersweet satire with a top-of-the-line British cast. 4 stars (****)
Go Johnny Go! (1959) It's rock 'n roll time, all you hepcats......and legendary DJ Alan Freed serves up a pile of 50's acts including Chuck Berry, Jimmy Clanton Jackie Wilson, Ritchie Valens and the Cadillacs, who sing an entire song about jaywalking....honest. The skimpy plot forces Freed and Chuck Berry to try acting scenes together.....painfully. Never mind, it's all about the music anyway. 3 stars (***)
Last Christmas (2019) The last big feature film holiday movie before the world plunged in plague ridden chaos the following year. We don't care how corny, how obvious, how manipulative, how oversweetened it was. Emilia Clarke was adorable, Emma Thompson was funny.....and for that matter, so was Michelle Yeoh. Who knew she could snap one-liners out faster than she kicks ass. 4 stars (****)
